Spinner Dean Cosker took a season's best 5-48 but Essex held on to draw with Glamorgan in Cardiff.
The hosts resumed on 126-1 but slipped to 174-5 before Jim Allenby (65no) and Mark Wallace (57) put on 119 for the sixth wicket as they declared on 296-7.
Essex were never in the hunt of their pursuit of 333 to win as slow left-armer Cosker reduced them to 104-6.
But Graham Napier and Tim Phillips dug in for 21 overs to guide their side to 143-6 before the draw was agreed.
BBC Wales cricket correspondent Edward Bevan:
"Alviro Petersen's belated declaration almost certainly cost Glamorgan this game.
"Petersen delayed the Glamorgan second innings until Essex had an impossible target of 333 from just 52 overs.
"Dean Cosker did his best by taking five of the six wickets that fell, but there was just not enough time to take remaining wickets.
"It wouldn't had mattered a lot had Glamorgan lost - far better to risk defeat in pursuit of victory, but obviously Petersen thought otherwise."
