CLOSE OF PLAY SUMMARY
BBC London 94.9's Kevin Hand:
"Middlesex will need to bat until tea on the final day if they're to stand any chance of saving the game.
"Chaminda Vaas bowled a cracking spell from the Pavilion End to start the rot in Middlesex's second innings but two wickets in three balls from Northamptonshire captain Andrew Hall swung the match heavily into his side's favour.
"Some poor shot selection earlier in the day saw Northamptonshire post a smaller first innings total than they had threatened at one stage. Most of the batsman got starts but no one took their knock on to a big score.
"The pitch played better than expected with only a few balls appearing to keep low, while Jamie Dalrymple was able to find bounce and turn as he bowled with better control as the day progressed. Those factors are likely to play a big part on the final day."
