Westwood's unbeaten 144 is his second County Championship century of the summer

Ian Westwood hit an unbeaten 144 as title-chasing Warwickshire ended day one of their clash with Nottinghamshire at Edgbaston in a handy position.

The Bears looked in potential trouble after slipping to 114-3 on a weather-affected day.

But Westwood, who hit 20 fours, dominated a unbroken stand of 121 for the fourth wicket with Jim Troughton (33 not out) as they closed on 235-3.

Warwickshire need eight points from the game to leapfrog leaders Durham.

They found it hard going against an accurate Notts attack but former Bears captain Westwood applied himself dilligently throughout in making his ninth career ton.

He dominated a second-wicket stand of 56 with William Porterfield (14), and, after Warwickshire's progress had been checked by Andre Adams during a spell when they scored 54 runs in 29 overs, shared a more fluent stand with Troughton.

Westwood outscored his current captain and completed his century off 205 balls. He had just struck his 20th boundary of the day when the umpires took the teams off for bad light 40 minutes before the scheduled close.

CLOSE OF PLAY SUMMARY

BBC Coventry & Warwickshire's Clive Eakin:

"If there's a move to alter the regulations on 'bad light' for next season Warwickshire are likely to be among the most enthusiastic supporters for change.

"These days the umpires alone make the decision as to whether or not to take the players off, and when they did so with 12 overs to go at Edgbaston it left Warwickshire's batsmen frustrated. Ian Westwood and Jim Troughton were in full swing and would have wanted to stay on.

"This comes a few days after umpires brought the Bears' match against Yorkshire to an early end when both teams wanted to continue in search of a crucial win.

"Nonetheless, Warwickshire will be happy enough with where they are at the end of the first day. Westwood has answered his critics in impressive style making the big century his team desperately needed. The title race is hotting up."
