VIEWS FROM THE COMMENTARY BOX

BBC London 94.9's Kevin Hand:

"An attritional day has left his match very much in the balance as Surrey still have work to do to reach parity at the close of the first innings.

"Dawid Malan picked up where he left off with a controlled 88 to lead Middlesex to 256.

"The Surrey opening stand of 85 was starting to make that total look a little less impressive, but a couple of wickets for Middlesex captain Neil Dexter has changed the complexion of the innings.

"With the new ball available an over into the third day, a further tumble may wrap the innings up quickly
