Australian Trent Copeland starred with the ball again as leaders Northants shaded day two against Hampshire.

After no play on Wednesday, day two was delayed before David Willey got rid of Jimmy Adams for a second-ball duck.

Copeland took 7-63 against Leicestershire two weeks ago and this time returned figures of 4-49, including Adam Wheater for 40 as the visitors slipped to 80-4.

Liam Dawson (57no) led Hampshire's recovery as they closed on 149-5.

Bad weather meant play did not get under way until 11:30 BST and Willey struck with the fourth ball of the day, having Adams caught behind by David Murphy.

Copeland dismissed Michael Carberry for 10, James Vince for eight and Sean Ervine (26), before Wheater and Dawson put on 63 for the fifth wicket.

The Australian bagged his 27th Championship wicket of the season when Wheater, who had hit two sixes and five fours, became his fourth victim of the innings.

Bad light forced the players off twice in the final session, before rain brought a final end to the day's play.

BBC Northampton's Chris Egerton:

"Good work from Hampshire to dig themselves out of trouble and to some safety at the close in a game which looks destined for a draw.

"With one ball short of 14 overs only possible after tea thanks to bad light, that begs a question.

"Northants cannot use their lights in the County Championship because of planning rules restricting the number of days on which they can be used.

"With most residents away at work during the day, why not?"
