Steven Mullaney scored the second century of his Notts career to put the visitors on top in their mid-table match against Surrey at The Oval.
Mullaney, who scored his first Notts ton on his first-class debut for the county in 2010, hit 104 as his side finished on 360-6, a lead of 162.
Resuming on 50-0, he shared a first wicket stand of 105 with Riki Wessels, who was lbw to Chris Tremlett for 47.
And batting at number five, Samit Patel was unbeaten on 87 at the close.
Patel batted for 204 minutes and faced 149 balls for his runs while Mullaney, in only his second first-class match as an opener and who was fourth out, was at the crease for 282 minutes and received 201 deliveries.
Tremlett, overlooked by England for Wednesday's first Ashes Test, also picked up the wickets of Michael Lumb and Chris Read to finish with 3-71 from 23 overs.
The other three wickets fell to the spinners with Gary Keedy taking 2-73 and Zafar Ansari 1-19.
The main focus on the third day is likely to be Ricky Ponting's final first-class innings when Surrey bat again.
