Wayne White took 6-25 and Billy Godleman and Chesney Hughes hit half-centuries as Derbyshire reached 169-1 to move to within 63 runs of a stunning comeback win over Kent after day two.

Derbyshire were teetering on 67-7 overnight and the hosts saw off the tail, Ivan Thomas taking three wickets to leave the visitors 119 runs adrift.

Kent were 73-3 at lunch but seven wickets fell for 39 runs in their 112.

And Hughes (82 no) and Godleman (61 no) then guided Derbyshire to 169-1.

A total of 17 wickets fell on the first day and that pattern continued in the first two sessions.

Having added just 19 runs to their score Derbyshire looked in serious trouble but White clean bowled three of his victims on his way to figures of 6-25 from 9-4 overs to turn the game.

Ben Slater fell early on when he was trapped lbw by Matt Coles, but Hughes and Godleman batted with rare calm in a match severely lacking that quality to put Derbyshire within sight of victory.
