Five batsmen made half-centuries as Kent dominated the second day's play against Essex at Tunbridge Wells.
Resuming on 68-0, only Sam Northeast failed to pass 50 as he was bowled by seamer Jamie Porter for 43.
Daniel Bell-Drummond led the scoring for the hosts with a quick-fire 81, while Rob Key (71) and Joe Denly (69) also made big contributions.
Ben Harmison (63 not out) and Darren Stevens (69 not out) saw Kent through to 420-4 at stumps, a lead of 160.
Kent's solid performance with the bat will increase their hopes of a third consecutive victory in the County Championship, having failed to win any of their opening eight fixtures in the competition.
The hosts controlled all three sessions and were only prevented from building a bigger lead by poor conditions, as bad light caused an early end to proceedings after tea.
