Harry Gurney's career-best 6-61 helped Nottinghamshire take control against Durham on day one at Chester-le-Street.

Gurney toppled the hosts' top order, dismissing Keaton Jennings (33) and Scott Borthwick (20) as well as Michael Richardson and Jack Burnham for ducks before he bowled Graham Onions.

Durham, who batted after winning the toss, were eventually all out for 244.

Unbeaten half-centuries from Michael Lumb and Jake Libby saw Notts reach the close on 129-2.

Mark Stoneman top scored with 49 for a Durham side who have picked up the fewest batting bonus points in Division One so far this season.

The loss of Borthwick, caught behind by Chris Read off Gurney, sparked a mini-collapse from 115-2 to 121-5.

Read also snared Stoneman off the bowling of Steven Mullaney before Burnham and Richardson departed quickly.

Captain Paul Collingwood was forced to retire hurt after being hit in the groin, but returned to hit Samit Patel for consecutive sixes to take Durham past their first batting bonus point.

In Notts' reply, Mullaney (7) and Tom Moores (1) fell cheaply but an attacking unbeaten 68 from Michael Lumb helped the bottom-of-the-table visitors finish 115 runs behind with eight wickets in hand.
