Just glad it's not the usual sky procession to Paris. Loving this years tour, tt minus bad weather could make it a formality for froome however unless he totally implodes between now & then
Contador is the only rider in the peloton that can even the odds in his favour even if he isn't 100%. Superb riding from an all time great. It isn't many more times we'll see this again. Every time he does it, I savour it, like a vintage wine.
@31There's but a single Frenchman out of 4 on the race jury. So allegations of French bias are daft. However, stupid decision to penalise Uran and Bennett for being caught drinking on camera and then reverse it when footage of Bardet emerged. Also stupid of Bardet and Bennett to take random bottles - you never know what's in them.
Landa's riding exactly according to team orders on stage 12 (trying to catch Aru to steal bonus seconds) and stage 13 (setting up an ambush for Aru in the Alps). Froome and Portal clearly remember Giro 2015 though, when he defied team orders. So they spent Kwiatkowski to keep the gap down.
Would stages like this take more out of the riders than the twice the length but flatter routes? I would of thought so, seems to make sense to have more of these next time, great viewing and brilliant tactics, a bit like formula one when all teams use different pit stop strategies. Do they try and retain a certain distance for the overall tour?
Froome is finished
@39. If Froome has an ego what does that make Wiggins? All champions have an ego, it's what makes them who they are.
Well, it makes for an interesting week. It's hard to guess Sky's tactics. Is this the last of Froome in Yellow? Did Sky have an idea that G or Landa could contend this year? Pity G's out. Will make the time trial interesting too. Froome looks pretty fed up in his interviews. Am I reading into this too much? Not seen him look this down since the Wiggins win? His face said it all then
@21 Aru... "knew all his rivals' weaknesses. Froome's is his ego."I assume you are a professional mindreader as you appear to know exactly what is going on in the minds of Aru and Froome. You could earn a fortune working for one of the teams.
Landa was NOT freelancing, he was sent up the road by the Sky DS in order to mark the leaders and to force Aru to chase. It is of course convenient that by following orders in this way, Landa was able to improve his own position, thereby reducing his anger - there are stories that he was upset at being told off for not helping Froome after the latter blew up in the last 200m of Thursday's stage.
To those here who suddenly believe that Sky should put all their resources behind Landa...read the race. He & Kwiatkowski were up the road to draw out Bardet & particularly Aru (already weakened by the loss of Fuglsang & Cataldo). Landa is a great climber who can't sprint (10 potential bonus seconds lost in stage 13) or time trial. Refer to this year's Giro re. his GC capabilities. An enigma.
@33 It was a bit like when Stephen Roche's Carrera team were chasing him in the '87 Giro.
I think short mountain stages like today's are great. They always produce frenetic racing, the tactics are intriguing and the upshot is that the top of the GC has been compacted.I just love this sport!! Vive le Tour.
With Landa interested in a new contract with Moviestar, next year could be interesting. I love the strength in depth that Sky have and how other teams are sussing out how to break them but also the conflicts they have to manage internally. They raced like they were on fire today (PS Miss you, Geraint)
Landa should ask why Kwiatkowski and Froome were chasing him when he was on the front of his group.
Be interesting next year to see how ruthless Sky are if they think Landa is the better bet for the Tour (or the Giro & Vuelta). Will they be as unsentimental with Froome as they were with Wiggins in 2013?
How do I describe the removal of the penalties given to Bennett and Uran......transparent? Perectly happy to rightfully give penalties until they discover they also need to penalise a Frenchman in contention for the GC. So let's just penalise nobody!! Makes perfect sense....
