Germany's Olympic champion Michael Jung retains the lead after the cross-country round at Burghley Horse Trials.

Jung had shared top spot with Britain's William Fox-Pitt after Friday's dressage round.

But although his leader, Fischerrocana FST, retired after a fall, his other mount, La Biosthetique Sam, put in a strong display to lead on 40.0 points

He heads New Zealand husband and wife Tim and Jonelle Price on Ringwood Sky Boy (41.5) and Classic Moet (44.9).

Although Jung is one of the leading figures in the sport, he has never won at Burghley.

The leading Briton ahead of Sunday's concluding showjumping is ninth-placed Oliver Townend on Dromgurrihy Blue (51.4).

Fox-Pitt and Fernhill Pimms are in 13th on 54.6 after a disappointing cross-country round which saw them pick up 20.4 time penalties.
