Ipswich Town defender Damien Delaney admits he has been bemused by what he has branded a "crazy" season.

Town pulled themselves out of what looked like becoming a relegation fight and enjoyed a memorable 1-0 League Cup semi-final first-leg win over Arsenal.

But the Suffolk side were heavily beaten twice by rivals Norwich and hammered by Chelsea in the FA Cup.

"It's been crazy - massive highs and ridiculous lows," 29-year-old Delaney told BBC Radio Suffolk.

"I've never known anything like it: the high of the Arsenal game, we got beaten by seven at Chelsea, we were turned over at home to our rivals. It's a bit mad.

"But I suppose in January if you'd have asked the fans 'would you take 12th?' they'd have said 'yes'."

The Irishman, who , is hoping to reward the Portman Road faithful with a promotion campaign next season.

"If we're anywhere near promotion next season, attendances would be near 30,000 I'd hope," he said.

"If we can get it right at this place you'd be getting that every week. That's one of the main reasons I stayed. If you get this place right, there aren't many bigger clubs in the country."
