Bury striker Andy Bishop believes he is finally over the various injuries which have plagued him for two seasons.

The 28-year-old has had five operations over two years for a combination of knee, hernia and abductor problems.

"It's going to be tough to get in the side but I think I'm up for the challenge - I just want to play again," he told BBC Radio Manchester.

"I'm more confident that I have been. It's been a long pre-season as I've been in since last season finished."

Bishop joined the club from York City in 2006 and was prolific in his first three season at Gigg Lane, scoring 63 goals.

But since then, the former Walsall trainee, who has also had spells at Kidderminster, Rochdale and Yeovil, has netted just seven times over the past two campaigns due to his various injuries.

His latest knee injury prompted the striker to visit a knee specialist who has finally tracked down the problems he was suffering from.

"For the first time I went to a specialist and they went in with a camera and looked through my knee," he continued.

"It just sounds so ridiculous after being out for so long and no one has done that before.

"Last year was shocking. I was playing in pain the whole time and people are telling you, you are fine and just get on with it.

"You come on the pitch and it's a bit of a nightmare and the way it was handled was a bit of a shambles."

But Bishop added: "It's nice to know it's all behind me and I've got to say a big thank you to Tommy Walsh, the physio, who worked with me day in day out."

Now back in full training, Bishop is hoping he can strike up a partnership with last season's top-scorer Ryan Lowe, as they prepare for life in League One.

"Ryan's been at the club two years now and I've been injured the whole time he's been here," he continued.

"He's a great player and hopefully we can have a good partnership as at times it has worked on the training ground."
