Southport have high hopes, says defender Simon Grand

Southport defender Simon Grand says the side are aiming to improve their fortunes in the Blue Square Bet Premier this season.

The Sangrounders gained a reprieve from relegation last season after Rushden and Diamonds went out of business.

"With the players that are being brought in, we want to do well and be more competitive in the league," Grand told BBC Radio Merseyside.

"You don't want to be in a dog fight at the end of the season, no one does."

Grand joined Southport from Fleetwood Town in June, after having loan spells at Mansfield and Aldershot last season, and he says the decision to move to the Sandgrounders was simple.

"Ideally everyone's first choice is to play at the highest level you possibly can," Grand explained.

"As soon as the opportunity came up here there wasn't anything to think about. There was a contract on offer, it's a great club and it's conference football.

"It's a chance for me to get some games under my belt, so it was an easy decision for me really."
