South African striker Benni McCarthy scored the winner for his new club Orlando Pirates on the opening day of the PSL season.

The former Blackburn Rovers star returned to South Africa earlier this month after a long career in Europe.

McCarthy is South Africa's record scorer but missed out on the World Cup last year because of fitness problems.

He was released by West Ham in the middle of last season without having scored for them.

Pirates' 2-0 win over Black Leopards on Friday got their defence of the South African title off to a great start.

Bongani Ndulua opened the scoring for them and was then replaced by McCarthy, who fired home from close range eight minutes later.

McCarthy has signed a two-year deal with Pirates who are hoping to retain their title and make an impact on African club competition next year.
