Teenage Carlisle United defender Steven Swinglehurst has signed for Cumbrian non-league neighbours Kendal Town on a month-long loan deal.

The 18-year-old, who is yet to make a full first-team appearance at Brunton Park, featured in the United squad during their pre-season campaign.

"This is a good move for Steven," said United boss Greg Abbott.

"It gives him an opportunity to get some competitive football under his belt and will help his match fitness."

Abbott added: "It also helps their manager Lee Ashcroft. We know they look after our players down there, so we're more than happy for him to go and train and work with them."

Evo-Stik Premier side Kendal are also understood to be close to sealing a move for former Morecambe winger Neil Wainwright.

The 33-year-old, who was released by the Shrimps at the end of last season, has not played a senior match since Morecambe's 1-1 draw at Gillingham in April.
