Joe Cole hoping Lille form will earn England recall

Joe Cole hopes his form in Lille can help earn him a recall to Fabio Capello's England squad.

Cole, 29, joined the French champions on a season-long loan deal from Liverpool during the summer.

The former Chelsea midfielder has not been involved for his country since the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

"I miss playing for my country. I was a regular in the squad for 10 years and perhaps took it for granted I would always be there," he told the Guardian.

Cole has won 56 international caps and was a regular under former England managers Sven-Goran Eriksson and Steve McClaren.

He was released by Chelsea in 2010 after suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury in 2009 but struggled for form and fitness following his move to Liverpool on a free transfer.

After being sent off on his debut against Arsenal, Cole made just nine Premier League starts and Kenny Dalglish let him move to France on loan in August.

He added: "Not having been picked for a year, turning 30 next month and with the young players having come in and done well, you start to wonder, 'Are they still looking at me?'.

"I hope I will be noticed. A lot of people in England questioned why I came over and maybe wrote me off. Perhaps they're now thinking I'm not finished after all.

"It's not that I want to prove them wrong - that would be the wrong motivation.

"But I do want to prove to myself that I'm still a top player. This is an environment where I can do that."
