Northampton boss Aidy Boothroyd offers team clean slate

Northampton Town manager Aidy Boothroyd says he has not studied the team's previous defeats, ahead of his first match in charge against Crewe.

The former Coventry and Watford boss has had a full week to work with the players, with the Cobblers not playing in the FA Cup last Saturday.

Boothroyd told BBC Look East: "I got five DVDs put in front of me and I haven't watched them.

"That's the past now. I want to judge people with a fresh pair of eyes."

He added: "It's finding the right recipe and making sure that we get organised.

"All I've tried to do is add to the work already being done and make sure that we're very difficult to play against - which a lot of my teams are.

"We go with an attacking mantra that we try to win games. You don't win games if you don't keep clean sheets, so there's been a bit of work on that too.

"We're a long way away from where I want us to be, but I'm looking forward to getting started and taking those first steps."

Boothroyd has confirmed that, if selected, John Johnson will remain as captain of Northampton, who are looking to end an eight-match winless run in League Two.

Meanwhile, the new manager has praised striker Adebayo Akinfenwa and midfielder Michael Jacobs, who has been linked to moves away from Sixfields in the past.

"If you want [Akinfenwa] to run the channels and sprint for things, you've got the wrong guy," said Boothroyd.

"But he is one of the best box players I've ever seen with ball into feet and that's bearing in mind some of the lads I've worked with.

"He is absolutely fantastic and we're going to use that strength.

"Michael Jacobs has got a lot of ability, can play in different positions but the most important thing is his work ethic.

"I had a very good player in Ashley Young at Watford - there was interest in him and I said 'when the right club comes along, it'll be right for you to go, but don't rush.'

"I was certainly watching Michael at Coventry and Watford, so I know all about him."
