Crewe's Luke Murphy rejected hat-trick chance
Crewe midfielder Luke Murphy has revealed that he turned down the chance to score his first professional hat-trick against Plymouth on Saturday.
He had already netted twice in the game when the Alex were awarded a penalty.
Murphy told BBC Radio Stoke: "Being 2-1 up, I didn't want to take one, miss it, and then they go down the other end and score. It would be on my head.
"Ashley Westwood was the penalty taker before the game so it was only right for him to take it."
Westwood converted the spot-kick to restore Crewe's two-goal advantage, and although Matt Lecointe pulled a goal back for Plymouth, the hosts held on for a 3-2 victory.
Murphy, who had not scored since a home win over Barnet in September, was making his first start since 19 November and quickly made an impact on his return.
"It's always nice to get three points and play quite well," said the 22-year-old. "I've only scored once this season so it was a nice feeling to get on the scoresheet.
"It's something that I feel I can do but haven't done as much as I would like to. Hopefully I can start doing that a bit more."
Meanwhile, Crewe have extended the loan deal of Chesterfield midfielder Jamie Lowry until 29 January.
The 24-year-old has made seven appearances during his loan spell with the club and manager Steve Davis is keen to extend his stay at Gresty Road.
