Lionel Ainsworth has drawn inspiration from Shrewsbury's narrow FA Cup defeat at Middlesbrough as proof that they can go on to win promotion from League Two.

The Shrews lost 1-0 to the Championship promotion chasers after a late Marvin Emnes goal.

"The whole team played well and we can only take encouragement from the 90 minutes," he told BBC Radio Shropshire.

"It's disappointing we lost. But people looked at us and saw we can do it, and we can carry it on in the league too."

The former Huddersfield man had a good chance to open the scoring and admitted the miss has stayed with him.

"I should've scored. I thought about it too much and it came off the bottom of my boot - on other days it would've gone in."

The Shrews have struggled for goals recently having scored just three in their last four league outings.

That run has seen them slip to fifth in the table, seven points off the top three automatic promotion places.

But Ainsworth is confident the club can build on their strong performances in both the cup competitions this season: "We're a good side. We've shown how we can open up good sides like Derby, Swansea and Arsenal this season (in the Carling Cup), and we did the same against Middlesbrough.

"It was really encouraging to be given such support from the fans - even some of the Middlesbrough fans cheered us at the end."
