Newport 1-0 Gateshead

Ryan Charles' early winner boosted Newport's Blue Square Bet Premier survival bid as they saw off play-off hopefuls Gateshead at Spytty Park.

Andy Sandell's corner was intended for Gary Warren, but Charles toe-poked it home in the 12th minute.

Gateshead debutant Carl Magnay was sent off for a challenge on Charles just before half-time.

Visiting goalkeeper Paul Farman tipped Sam Foley's looping volley over the bar midway through the second half.

The outcome did not affect either team's league standing with Gateshead remaining ninth and the Exiles staying one place above the relegation zone in 20th.

But Charles' second goal of the season was enough to secure victory on a day when 21st-placed Hayes and Yeading won 2-1 at Southport.

Edinburgh praises 'solid' Newport

Newport County manager Justin Edinburgh said: "We are getting down to the part of the season where it is all about results more than performances and it was a solid performance rather than anything spectacular.

"Defensively we looked very sound so I was pleased. The boys showed great character on a tough surface."
