Newcastle United: Vurnon Anita confident of improvement
Midfielder Vurnon Anita is confident Newcastle United can avoid a struggle in the Premier League this term, after a difficult 2012-13 campaign.
Despite a batch of January arrivals, European involvement took its toll and just six league wins after the turn of the year led to a 16th place finish.
However a full pre-season has helped settle the squad for the new campaign.
Anita told BBC Newcastle: "We've got a good team but we didn't show it last season and now we start afresh."
He added: "We will show people we are better than we were last year."
Although he arrived on Tyneside with international pedigree - three caps for Netherlands during his time with Ajax - Anita made only 17 league starts as he acquainted himself with the demands of the Premier League.
However he was a frequent name on the teamsheet in the Europa League and the departure of James Perch is likely to increase his opportunities in his preferred midfield role.
"As a football player you always want to play," Anita added.
"But I'm a relaxed person, I know when my chance comes I will take it. I will do my best and see what happens.
"I hope to play more of course, and I will do my best for the team."
