Conference South side Chelmsford City have appointed Heybridge Swifts boss Mark Hawkes as their new manager.

He replaces Dean Holdsworth, who left the club at the beginning of November after a poor run of results.

Hawkes has overseen a strong start to the season at Heybridge, who are currently second in the Ryman Division One North.

Steve Smith, Hawkes' assistant at Heybridge, has also made the move to Melbourne Park.

Hawkes' first match in charge of the Clarets will be at home to Farnborough on Saturday.

Chelmsford, who missed out on promotion to the Conference Premier in the play-offs last season, have had a poor start to the campaign.

They are currently in the relegation zone, having lost their last six league games, conceding 22 goals in the process.
