Preston North End 1-1 Leyton Orient

Sir Tom Finney statue

Preston North End held promotion rivals Leyton Orient to a draw on an afternoon when Deepdale paid tribute to club legend Sir Tom Finney.

Before the match, fans, players and officials observed a minute's silence for the former England winger, who has died at the age of 91.

Preston's players, who wore shirts with Finney's name on the back, went behind when Mathieu Baudry struck.

However, Joe Garner's penalty earned North End a deserved point.

Kevin Davies spurned a glorious late chance to earn a poignant victory for Simon Grayson's men, but the former England and Bolton Wanderers striker could not direct Scott Wiseman's cross on target.

A crowd of 13,440 attended the match, almost 4,000 more than Preston's average for the season, and it created a fine atmosphere and fitting tribute to Finney, one of England's finest ever players.

Before the match, supporters passed around a large banner bearing Finney's face while videos of the one-club player were played on the big screen.

Both captains led their teams out carrying wreaths, which were handed over to Finney's family shortly before an impeccably observed minute's silence.

Orient had the game's best chance when the unmarked Lloyd James forced Declan Rudd into a good save from eight yards out while, at the other end, Garner shot wide after being picked out by Paul Gallagher.

Preston eventually got into their stride and Craig Davies's neat turn and shot was well saved by Eldin Jakupovic midway through the first half and Neil Kilkenny had a long-range strike tipped wide by the goalkeeper.

However, the visitors went into the lead when poor defending allowed the ball to break to Baudry, who rifled home from 10 yards out.

Preston got themselves back into the game after the break when Craig Davies was bundled over in the box and Garner kept his composure to level.

Kevin Davies spurned a great opportunity to take all three points, but it was not to be for the home side.

The result leaves Preston fourth, still five points behind third-placed Leyton Orient.

Preston manager Simon Grayson on 5 live Sport: "It was absolutely fantastic here today. It was very sad news last night but as a mark of the man, people have shown their respects all across different football clubs.

"Our club can be very proud of how we've conducted ourselves over the last 24 hours, because it's not easy. So many people came through the turnstiles today. Hopefully he'll be looking down on us with a smile on his face, hopefully if we get promotion this year.

"I once met him in his home - as a football person I wanted to go and experience a man who has respect across the game worldwide. I sat with him for a few hours and listened to his stories. I could have been there for many more hours. That was a moment I can look back on, and I think I was fortunate to have met such a man."

Leyton Orient manager Russell Slade told BBC London 94.9: "They got back into the game from a penalty situation and I thought it was an excellent dive.

"Their keeper has also handled the ball a good three or five metres outside the box.

"We were set up better than we have been recently. There were not too many chances at either end. We thought we could be a threat on the counter-attack. It was going to be a difficult day today and a tough outing for us and it was important after the defeats we have had to get something out of the hand.

"We have conceded lots of late goals lately and maybe with hindsight it will be a decent point, but when you are one nil up and a penalty decision has gone against you when someone has dived horizontal through the air, it's disappointing."
