Chester 2-0 Tamworth
Chester eased their Conference Premier relegation fears with two second-half goals to plunge Tamworth nearer the drop.
After having to rely on a string of saves by keeper Aaron Chapman to stay on level terms, City needed a slice of luck to go ahead on 62 minutes.
Tamworth defender Ben Richards-Everton lucklessly diverted Lewis Turner's low cross into his own net.
Debutant Danny Carlton then scrambled home the clincher five minutes later.
With Aldershot losing at home to Gateshead, Chester are now five points clear of danger, but Tamworth are 10 points adrift of safety.
Chester assistant manager Carl Macauley told BBC Radio Merseyside:
"It was really important that we got a result tonight. We started off positively and then they had a spell when they kept possession well, but then we finally broke them down.
"Whoever got the first goal would go on to win the game and we got it."
