Burton Albion 2-0 Portsmouth

Adam McGurk scores the opener against Portsmouth
Adam McGurk's opener was his second goal of the season

Burton Albion beat Portsmouth to go top of League Two and continue their unbeaten start to the season.

The Brewers were ahead within two minutes when Adam McGurk touched in Stuart Beavon's cross-shot.

Jed Wallace volleyed wide a rare first-half chance for Pompey and home keeper John McLaughlin had to make a double save from Alex Wynter after the break.

But Lucas Akins' superb turn and shot on 55 minutes eased Burton to a fifth successive home win this season.

Miles Storey's blocked shot was as close as Pompey came late on and Andy Awford's side remain ninth in the table.

Burton Albion boss Gary Rowett told BBC Radio Derby:

"It was an excellent all round performance. I think lots of aspects of our game were very, very good against a very good Portsmouth side.

"Our attacking was fantastic at times. We were very disciplined with our team shape and when we do that we're a really difficult team to break down and play against.

"Goals change the outlook of games, and I think when you score that early, the way we play it makes it very difficult for any team because they've got to chase the game and the more they chase the game, the more it opens up for us."

Portsmouth boss Andy Awford told BBC Radio Solent:

Awford on Burton v Portsmouth

"When you concede after a minute you are always up against it., which was disappointing from our point of view but we worked our way back in to the game. We just weren't clinical enough in both boxes.

"We had enough chances to win two football matches let alone one so that's the area I'm concerned with.

"We haven't hit the target well enough at times or the final ball when we get into good areas. We've controlled the game for long parts but you've got to take your chances and you've got to defend it better at the other end."
