Bolton Wanderers 0-0 Sheffield Wednesday

Andy Lonergan
Bolton's Andy Lonergan won man of the match but only played because of an injury to regular keeper Adam Bogdan

Bolton remain in the Championship bottom three after a dull 0-0 draw with Sheffield Wednesday.

The visitors went closest to taking all three points, twice having efforts kicked off the line.

Goalkeeper Andy Lonergan, deputising for injured Hungarian international Adam Bogdan, was Bolton's star man.

Dougie Freedman's side remain without a Championship win but did manage a first clean sheet at the sixth attempt after a dismal start to the new campaign.

Wednesday striker Stevie May had the ball in the net on 19 minutes but referee Andy Haines blew for a foul by Owls' top scorer Atdhe Nuhiu in the build-up.

Chris Maguire should have taken advantage when Bolton's defence failed to deal with a cross into the area, but his first shot was hacked off the line by Matt Mills and a second effort drifted wide of the post.

Wanderers created little to trouble Keiren Westwood, with lone striker Joe Mason well shackled by the Wednesday rearguard.

Liam Palmer was left frustrated by a late Lonergan save, while Dean Moxey came to Bolton's rescue with an even later goal-line clearance from a Tom Lees header as Wednesday were denied a third Championship victory.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Stuart Gray:

"You want your midfielders and forwards sticking the ball in the net and doing what they get paid for.

"We totally dominated the game but we need to be more ruthless. I am disappointed we have dropped two points because it was such a one-sided game.

"We do shooting in training every day and you need a bit of calmness. The most important touch of a footballer is the last touch and we were trying to smash it in the net. Top, top players just roll it into the net."

Freedman on Bolton v Sheff Wed

Bolton boss Dougie Freedman:

"I thought the performance was good and we were very brave on the ball. But we could have created one or two more opportunities and that was what was lacking from our performance.

"They asked a lot of questions of us defensively but I thought we coped very well. Did we do enough to win the game? Probably not.

"But I don't think we deserved to lose. We came up against a very good team, especially away from home."
