Stevenage 1-0 Shrewsbury Town

Stevenage secured a second win in eight games with victory over Shrewsbury.

The only goal of the game came when Darius Charles's volley took a big deflection to wrong-foot goalkeeper Jayson Leutwiler and hit the net.

Connor Calcutt and Charlie Lee were both denied by Leutwiler before Bira Dembele headed wide for the hosts.

With Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro looking threatening, Shrewsbury nearly earned a point, but Jermaine Grandison's late header came back off the bar.

Stevenage boss Graham Westley told BBC Three Counties Radio:

"I probably expected when we began the season that we'd have a few ugly wins along the way to becoming a decent side.

Westley on Stevenage v Shrewsbury

"There have been moments when we've had ugly defeats and ugly draws and this was an ugly win, which is a sign I guess that the lads are better.

"Some of the decisions we made were a little bit naïve, a little bit inexperienced. But the appetite was there. When you've got the appetite and you've got learning players it's a joy to be the manager.

"I said to them that the job of work is to get to the top half. While we're learning and while we're improving and while the lads are getting started as league players, if we can stay in amongst it everybody knows what we we'll do after Christmas."

Shrewsbury Town manager Micky Mellon told BBC Radio Shropshire:

"If you don't take your chances you are going to find it very difficult to score - but my team never got frustrated and the only thing that was missing for us was getting that all important goal.

"I know we have got good strikers here at the club and one day they will perform. We couldn't get that little bit of fortune.

"I am pleased to come here and play the way that we did. But we are frustrated to not get a result, despite creating a lot of chances.

"There is no way any doom and gloom at this club. We've had five out of six away games, and we have no concerns from me. All I can say is 'finish your chances and it's a different story'."
