Former France striker Nicolas Anelka will play for Mumbai City in the inaugural Indian Super League.

The ex-Arsenal and Real Madrid player was sacked by West Brom in March for gross misconduct.

His departure from The Hawthorns came after he was banned and fined by the Football Association for making the "quenelle" gesture during a game.

"I'm pleased to join Mumbai City FC and very excited to join Indian Super League," Anelka, 35, tweeted.

"Talented international players & top Indian talent will make matches thrilling affairs," added the Frenchman, whose former clubs also include Chelsea and Manchester City.

The 10-week ISL tournament will get underway in October with the aim of increasing the popularity of football in India.
