AFC Telford United 1-2 Chester

Sean McConville
Sean McConville's winner saw Chester record their first away victory in five attempts

Chester came from behind at the Bucks Head to shatter AFC Telford's hopes of a second home win in four days.

Telford led on 19 minutes when Mike Grogan latched onto an error by Michael Kay to blast home from eight yards.

But John Rooney levelled for the visitors from a low, curling free-kick nine minutes later after Neill Byrne had fouled City striker Craig Hobson.

Sean McConville then pounced from close range to head the winner on 66 minutes, earning a third victory in four games.

Chester's reprieve
Chester would have swapped places with promoted Telford in the summer, but remained in the Conference because of Hereford United's off-the-field troubles.

Telford, promoted back to the Conference in April, had picked up only their second win in 44 games in English non-league football's top flight when they beat Torquay United 4-3 on Saturday.

The Bucks' overall first-half dominance suggested that another win was on the cards, but Chester were the better side after the break.

And it needed a couple of good saves from home keeper Jonathan Hedge, including a stunning one low down from his own team-mate Rod McDonald, to keep it at 2-1.

Chester climb a place to 16th in the Conference, while Telford remain two points adrift at the bottom.

Telford must stop soft goals - Watson

"Goals change games. For the first half an hour, we were on top completely and then we gave them a stupid goal when they had never looked a threat.

"But that gave them a lifeline. And, in the second half, we dropped too deep, could not get hold of the ball, never threatened their goal and looked physically tired.

"We're not looking out of our depth. We just keep on shipping poor goals. That's five conceded from set pieces now in two games. We're starting to look a soft touch in that area. That's the alarming thing."

Chester assistant manager Jon McCarthy told BBC Radio Merseyside:

"We didn't start well and made a couple of mistakes. Telford had a lift on Saturday with their first win of the season and had a little bit more belief about them, which we had to match. But we kept persisting.

"John Rooney's little bit of quality got us back into the game and we felt crosses and corners would eventually get us something and it did. We showed what you need to do to get points in this division.

"It's been a massive month for us. To have the result we did against Wrexham and beat teams who are below us in the table is significant. Our next little target is now to beat those teams above us in the table to bridge that gap."
