Stevenage 1-2 Luton Town

Alex Wall came off the bench to supply a composed finish that led Luton to victory over local rivals Stevenage and into the League Two play-off places.

Luke Wilkinson climbed above Boro's defence to head Luton into an early lead after a free-kick from Andy Drury.

Tom Pett equalised from close range following a flowing team move.

But Wall found himself unmarked at the edge of the area and curled the ball into Chris Day's bottom corner to win the game for the Hatters.

Stevenage Manager Graham Westley told BBC Three Counties Radio:

"It was a very difficult opening for us - for the first 20 minutes we didn't get started at all and it could have been a lot worse for us.

Westley on Stevenage v Luton

"They got their noses in front, but our response was good. We dug in and we started to get our game going forward and the equaliser was a fair reflection of our response.

"Our defending in fairness, all afternoon, was very back footed. It's not the way I like to defend, and if you invite people into your box then the ball can go into your net.

"We expected the unexpected in all sorts of regards and I don't think there were surprises there. We picked an adaptable side ourselves so we could adapt as the game developed."

Luton Manager John Still told BBC Three Counties Radio.

"He's one of those players Alex (Wall), whenever he plays he gets a chance. I said to him, you'll get a chance so just make sure you hit the target. People call it an inspired substitution, but it was only a substitution.

Luton Town boss John Still on Stevenage win

"Local derbies I think are the toughest to win. We've come here today and won, so obviously I'm really pleased.

"I think we're getting into that vein of form now, like we had last year, where we'll have a 20 minute purple patch where we can score three or four goals and I think that's coming together now.

"Every credit to them they worked hard, they battled hard and responded to their support. I think that they've really given it every go, but today was our day."
