Chester 1-0 Aldershot Town

Matty Hughes
Hughes came through the youth system at Premier League side Everton

Chester's latest signing Matty Hughes marked his debut with an 80th-minute winner as Steve Burr's side leapfrogged Aldershot in the Conference table.

For all Chester's domination, the Shots wasted the best first-half chance when on-loan Mark Phillips put a free header wide from Sam Hatton's free-kick.

Craig Mahon had a goal disallowed when he tucked home from close range only for the linesman to rule offside.

But Hughes broke the deadlock when he curled in a low, angled left-foot shot.

Dream debut
Matty Hughes, who began his career at Everton, only joined Chester on Monday from League One side Fleetwood

Chester, denied three points by a late Welling equaliser on Saturday, had to survive an almighty late goalmouth scramble before being able to claim a third clean sheet in their last six home games.

The hosts move up to 14th, seven points shy of the play-off spots, a place ahead of Andy Scott's Shots.

Chester manager Steve Burr told BBC Radio Merseyside:

Burr on Chester v Aldershot

"It was very pleasing to beat a team who I feel will take a lot of points off other teams in this division this season.

"We played some exciting football and you can be sure that, if I'm feeling excited in the dug-out, then the fans will be.

"On a night game, on a wet pitch, it was made for passing the ball around and we might have taken a few more chances.

"It was nice for Matty Hughes to score on his debut. He gives us a bit of an extra option."

Aldershot Town manager Andy Scott told BBC Surrey:

"You only deserve to get something if you convert your chances.

"As always, the first goal is crucial and we had some fantastic opportunities.

"We're just lacking in forward areas at the moment.

"It's the same old story. Everyone can see that we're not too far away."
