Walsall 1-0 Chesterfield

Walsall ended a run of three defeats to move out of the League One relegation places with victory over Chesterfield.

Saddlers top scorer Tom Bradshaw marked his return from injury with his sixth goal of the season.

He converted from close range on 61 minutes after a fine move involving Anthony Forde and Michael Cain.

Chesterfield had the better chances, but Sam Clucas spurned two openings and Gary Roberts also shot wide in stoppage time as they pressed for an equaliser.

Walsall manager Dean Smith told BBC WM:

"The fans really got behind us again. They can see what we're trying to do and gave us excellent support.

"Chesterfield are a good team who pushed us all the way, but I felt that overall we had the better chances, particularly in the first half.

"The lads kept plugging away and got their reward in the end. It was a well-worked goal that won it for us with some great link-up play and a nice finish from Tom Bradshaw.

"It's good to have him back from injury. To see Sam Mantom come on during the second half was a real boost and Anthony Forde was outstanding when he came on."

Chesterfield manager Paul Cook told BBC Radio Sheffield:

"We're just going through that period now- it's confidence.

"When you're winning everything goes right and everything breaks for you- look at Gary Roberts' chance at the end- he doesn't miss from there.

"And what you must do at times like this is stay strong.

"I stay as positive as I can be. It's a difficult league with strong teams in it."
