Shrewsbury Town 2-1 Portsmouth

Micky Mellon's Shrewsbury Town secured a fourth consecutive victory as they came from behind to beat Portsmouth.

Pompey took an early lead through Jed Wallace's third-minute penalty, awarded for Town defender Mickey Demetriou's handball from Craig Westcarr's corner.

The hosts pulled level in the 13th minute when James Wesolowski drilled home his first goal for the club.

Captain Connor Goldson scored the winner in style when his 30-yard effort flew into the top corner of the net.

The visitors almost snatched a late equaliser but substitute Patrick Agyemang's header was blocked on the line by former Pompey man Liam Lawrence.

Shrewsbury Town manager Micky Mellon told BBC Sport:

"We're disappointed with the start. That's not a habit I want to get into. But, from that moment onm we showed that we've got a lot of guts and determination.

"The boys knew that, if they just kept grinding away, we'd get our moment, and we scored not too long after with a great goal from Wesolowski that calmed us down and kept us going.

"I've got to say that the fans played a massive part, and the Portsmouth fans too. It was a fantastic atmosphere created by two sets of fans that wanted to come and be heard."

Awford on Shrewsbury v Portsmouth

Portsmouth manager Andy Awford told BBC Radio Solent:

"The spirit that the players showed was fantastic. They gave it their absolute all and I've just said to them if you're going to get beat, you get beat the right way.

"I'm low because I feel for the players. As long as they put that effort in and that desire and application and keep going, we will pick up points on the road with that type of performance. I am pleased with the performance but disappointed we didn't come away with any points.

"There's a massive improvement since Bury in the last two performances. We have won one and lost one. We have to keep that momentum going."
