Fleetwood Town have appointed former Bolton and Iceland full-back Gretar Steinsson as technical director.

The 33-year-old has been working in the Netherlands at AZ Alkmaar since ending his playing career in September 2013 because of a knee injury.

He is the first person to fill a technical director role at the club.

"We were extremely interested to listen to his ideas and the knowledge he has obtained during his whole career," said chairman Andy Pilley.

"It is key for the club's future that we continue to build a strong infrastructure.

"Gretar will bring a great level of professionalism and shares the same ambitions and aspirations."

Steinsson moved to England when he joined Bolton for £3.5m in 2008 from current Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal's AZ Alkmaar side.

He moved to Turkish side Kayserispor after his Wanderers contract expired in 2012, but left halfway through a two-year deal because of his injury.
