Phil Edwards
Phil Edwards' goal was his third of the season for Burton

Defender Phil Edwards scored the only goal as Burton moved up to second in the table with victory over Bury.

Jacob Blyth drove into the side-netting as the Brewers enjoyed early pressure.

Bury's Nick Pope did well to push away a deflected Adam McGurk shot after the break, before Jon McLaughlin kept out a swerving effort from Soares.

Edwards put Burton ahead from Stuart Beavon's flick-on, but McLaughlin had to make a superb save to deny Daniel Nardiello's header for Bury late on.

The win was the home side's first in either league or cup against Bury, with five defeats and three draws from eight previous meetings.

It left them behind League Two leaders Shrewsbury on goal difference only, and extended their current unbeaten run to nine games.

Burton Albion manager Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink told BBC Radio Derby:

Hasselbaink on Burton v Bury

"We were very solid and gave nothing away and I think overall the whole game is a deserved win.

"The 15 minutes were difficult for us but we coped with it, we stood firm and I think our goalkeeper had two important saves to make.

"At times you know you have to dig in as a team and you have to play from your organisation, get back into your organisation and don't get beat.

"We were solid, we were organised and we were willing to work hard for each other and that is important."

Flitcroft on Burton v Bury

Bury manager David Flitcroft told BBC Radio Manchester:

"I thought it was a game that lacked any real quality for two teams that are up there. It was a real scrap, struggle and one set piece or one moment of clinical finishing was going to undo either team.

"You've got to keep high levels of quality when you play against Burton to get something, because they don't give much away - they're very resolute, they're very determined.

"You've got to be very good in the last third against Burton and we were just 20 percent off that today."
