Winchester fires Cliftonville to win over Ballymena

Jude Winchester's goal in the 75th minute gave Irish Premiership champions Cliftonville victory over Ballymena United at Solitude.

Winchester advanced to collect a James Knowles corner on the right and made room to fire a low shot past United goalkeeper Tim Allen.

It meant back-to-back wins for Tommy Breslin's men but they are still 11 points behind leaders Crusaders.

Ballymena, with just one win in seven, remain eighth in the table.

In the opening exchanges, David Cushley, the hero of Ballymena's Irish Cup victory over Cliftonville two weeks earlier, had a shot blocked by the United defence.

Martin Murray and Ronan Scannell then had long-range efforts saved by Allen.

Cliftonville midfielder Ryan Catney had to go off with a shoulder injury after being caught by the boot of Gary Thompson who was booked.

Jay Donnelly, who replaced Catney, had a shot palmed away by keeper Allen.

It looked like Cliftonville were going to be frustrated until Winchester produced the winner for the Reds.
