Dungannon Swifts moved up to ninth place and further away from relegation danger by beating Ballymena United.

Terry Fitzpatrick scored the Swifts' 34th-minute winner, heading in at the back post after Matt Hazley had curled the ball in.

United goalkeeper Tim Allen was forced to make fine second-half saves from Andrew Mitchell, Jamie Glackin and Stefan Lavery as the hosts dominated.

Ballymena created little, though David Cushley went close early in the game.

Gary Thompson had a chance for the Sky Blues in the first minute, then Hazley turned and fired a right-foot shot wide of the post.

Cushley saw his effort tipped over by Andy Coleman and Paddy McNally headed over from close range from the resulting corner.

Fitzpatrick broke the deadlock when his header was adjudged to have crossed the line, before Eamon McAllister had appeals for a penalty waved away prior to the break.

In the second half, substitute Mitchell turned and struck a left-foot attempt from 12 yards which was pushed round the post by Allen.

The visiting keeper denied Glackin's curling shot, Mitchell blazed over the bar and Lavery forced Allen into another fine stop two minutes from the end.
