Wycombe Wanderers 1-0 Shrewsbury Town

Sam Wood
Midfielder Sam Wood scored his fourth league goal of the season for Wycombe

Wycombe moved past Shrewsbury in the League Two promotion places as Sam Wood's early goal proved enough to win.

The Chairboys opened the scoring after just 40 seconds when Wood provided a bullet header to a right-wing cross from Nico Yennaris.

Wycombe's fast start continued and Jayson Leutwiler had to be alert to tip over Fred Onyedinma's 20-yard drive.

Substitute Aaron Holloway hit the bar for Wycombe before they saw off late Shrewsbury pressure to secure victory.

Wycombe climb past Shrewsbury into second place, three points behind League Two leaders Burton Albion.

Wycombe manager Gareth Ainsworth told BBC Three Counties Radio:

Ainsworth on Wycombe v Shrewsbury

"We really performed well, I thought the boys set the bar really high.

"Two weeks running we've had to change the team after the warm up. That will derail teams but not us and the spirit we have.

"I've got to give Shrewsbury credit. They came after us and put us under some severe pressure but you're going to get that. I thought we finished the game the stronger.

"I'm really pleased with a clean sheet and three points. But it means nothing if we can't back this up on Tuesday against Accrington."

Shrewsbury Town manager Micky Mellon told BBC Radio Shropshire:

"I am disappointed with the first half - to lose a goal so early really put us on the back foot. We came out second best in too many areas of the pitch.

"In the second half we were a little bit better, but didn't quite get the break we needed to get that equaliser.

"I am surprised in the performance - to allow a free header and a goal after just a few minutes was really disappointing. We never found the fire to springboard us forward and give us the lift.

"It's a concern looking at our record of one win in five - but stats don't bother me and we move on very quickly. I'll only concentrate on our next game and we will focus on our trip to Morecambe on Tuesday night."
