Wycombe 2-2 Accrington Stanley

Sam Wood
Defender Sam Wood gave hosts Wycombe the lead in the 30th minute

Wycombe Wanderers missed the chance to go top of League Two as they were held to a draw by a resilient Accrington.

The hosts had led through Sam Wood, who headed in after Paul Hayes's right-footed shot was only parried.

Stanley drew level on the stroke of half-time as Terry Gornell finished a neat team move from close range.

Piero Mingoia's sweet strike put the visitors ahead after the break but Wycombe equalised soon afterwards with Alfie Mawson's deflected effort.

Wycombe, who were without suspended striker Matt McClure, looked on course for a fourth win in six games when Wood nodded in.

The hosts' good first-half work was undone when Gornell drew level, but Mawson almost headed his side back in front straight after the break, only to place it over from close range.

Mingoia found the top corner of the net from the edge of the area but Wanderers fought back to deservedly draw level, even if Mawson's equaliser had a touch of fortune about it.

Wycombe looked the stronger as they searched for a winner that would have sent them above leaders Burton on goal difference, but could not find a way past goalkeeper Scott Davies.

The result sees the Chairboys drops to third, with Burton still to play on Wednesday, while Accrington are now 17th, eight points above the relegation zone.

Wycombe manager Gareth Ainsworth told BBC Three Counties Radio:

Ainsworth on Wycombe v Accrington

"How we didn't score a third, I'll never know. I think we had 19 shots on their goal but you've got to convert them.

"In the first 30 minutes, we tore them apart and played some good stuff.

"Both teams looked tired tonight - it was a tired League Two game with two sides who can't really rotate too much with the size of their squads.

"But we'll take four points from the last two games."
