Derby County midfielder Omar Mascarell is set to miss the rest of the season with a tendon injury in his foot.

The 22-year-old Spaniard was hurt in training before the draw at Norwich City in the middle of March.

Mascarell has played 30 games since joining Derby in the summer, making 18 starts in the Championship.

Head coach Steve McClaren told BBC Radio Derby: "He could be out until the end of the season. He has been fantastic and we will miss him."

Mascarell made his debut as a substitute on the opening day of the season against Rotherham and McClaren said he has become an important part of Derby's promotion challenge.

"We have looked at combinations in midfield and what produces the best, and Omar has been in the middle three that has been one of the top trio," McClaren added.

"It's difficult to come in and impose yourself in another country but he has done it and grown in to our game. He has become more aggressive and more English-like."
