Milan 3-1 Cagliari

AC Milan's fans feel several projects are started and abandoned by the club within months

Thousands of AC Milan fans boycotted their home victory over Cagliari in a protest over president Silvio Berlusconi's running of the club.

The Curva Sud ultras group called for fans to not attend the match or buy merchandise in a bid for Berlusconi to be more transparent.

Milan, whose manager Filippo Inzaghi is under pressure, moved up to seventh thanks to two goals from Jeremy Menez and one from Philippe Mexes.

Diego Farias scored for Cagliari.

No official attendance was given for the game but there appeared to be lots of empty seats in the 80,000-capacity San Siro, as AC Milan fans unfurled banners reading 'Game Over' and 'Insert coin & #SaveACMilan'.

AC Milan have won 18 Serie A titles and seven European Cups but finished eighth last season, failing to qualify for the Champions League - and are on course for a similar finish this term.

Jeremy Menez
Jeremy Menez's second goal was a disputed penalty

Inzaghi's job is understood to be in doubt, with Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport reporting before the game that AC Milan were already looking at alternative managers.

Some of the pressure may have been relieved with a victory which moved them up three places from 10th.

Menez opened the scoring with a fantastic curling effort before Farias rolled home an equaliser early in the second half. Moments later Mexes volleyed Milan back in front.

And they sealed the game through a controversial penalty. Alessio Cerci was fouled outside the box by Luca Ceppitelli but the referee awarded a penalty which Menez scored.
