Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 Brentford

Kieran Lee of Sheffield Wednesday
Prior to this win, the Owls had won only one of their last six meetings at Hillsborough.

Brentford suffered a major blow to their Championship play-off challenge with a 1-0 defeat away at mid-table Sheffield Wednesday.

Kieran Lee stole in with 15 minutes remaining to snatch all three points for the hosts and condemn the Bees to a first defeat in five league games.

Brentford will rue missed opportunities by Andre Gray and Alan Judge.

The result leaves the Londoners seventh, three points outside the play-offs, with Wednesday up to 11th.

Prior to kick-off, Mark Warburton's Brentford side had gone unbeaten for a month, while Wednesday were winless in three.

But a tepid first half produced only one obvious opening, with a 35th-minute whipped cross finding Caolan Lavery inside the box, only for the Owls forward to fire wide.

25 April: Reading (away)
2 May: Wigan (home)

After the interval, some clever play around the area from Brentford presented Gray with an opportunity to get a shot on target, but his effort skimmed just past the post.

Wednesday's Sergiu Bus then collected the ball but failed to play in teammate Chris Maguire, a two-on-one situation coming to nothing.

But the hosts finally broke the deadlock on 75 minutes, with Brentford keeper David Button only able to parry a shot to the feet of Lee, who poked home from six yards.

Brentford's Judge found himself in sufficient space to unleash an effort five minutes later, but squandered the chance to snatch a point, blasting high over the bar.

Brentford boss Mark Warburton:

"We had good chances either side of half-time and goals change games, it's very simple.

"There's no use complaining about it. You can't hide the fact that it's a disappointment but we created enough chances to win the game and got punished for a mistake.

"We are capable of getting 80 points, which is a very very strong total. In other years I think 72 has been the average and the highest in the last five years has been 75 I think."

Sheffield Wednesday manager Stuart Gray:

"I think we've played better and lost games. I think we've played better and only drawn games. But the most important thing tonight was getting a win.

"Typical Sheffield Wednesday, we got chances to get the second goal and couldn't kill it off.

"We've got to be a bit more clinical. But I'm pleased for the fans too because they've not seen many wins here this season.

"The most important thing is the result and, credit to the players, we're in that mid-table position where people think the boys have got their flip-flops on and they haven't."
