Coventry City 1-3 Crewe Alexandra

Crewe Alexandra striker Lauri Dalla Valle
Crewe Alexandra striker Lauri Dalla Valle now has three goals in his past four games

Crewe moved two points clear of the League One relegation places with a much-needed win at Coventry.

The hosts started the game strongly, but fell behind when Lauri Dalla Valle tapped the ball past goalkeeper Lee Burge for his third goal in four games.

Burge then dropped a cross 12 minutes later to allow Ryan Colclough to double the Railwaymen's lead before the break.

Marcus Haber's header made it 3-0 on 73 minutes before Nick Proschwitz headed in a consolation for the Sky Blues.

The Alex like being sent to Coventry
Crewe are unbeaten in their last five away games against Coventry City, having not lost at the Ricoh Arena now in four visits and at Sixfields last season

Both teams are now tied on 52 points, two above the relegation zone.

Both sides will be safe if Colchester, in 23rd place, lose to promotion-chasing Swindon on Tuesday night and Coventry avoid defeat in next Sunday's final game of the season at fourth-from-bottom Crawley.

Sky Blues boss Tony Mowbray told BBC Coventry & Warwickshire:

"It was always a dangerous game for us. We shot ourselves in the foot a little bit in the first half. I don't think they were great creative goals.

"It was a disappointment, but it was educational for me to the point where it exposed the frailties of certain individuals.

"It would have been nice to have had a nice week in the lead up to the final game without any tension or pressure. But we've now got to go to Crawley and get a result.

"Footballers have to stand up and be counted sometimes and get the job done, and they didn't do that. We weren't good enough to win and we have to accept that."
