Stenhousemuir added another episode to Queen's Park's play-off woes with a narrow win in the first leg of their League One final at Hampden.

Jamie McCormack applied a well-directed header to Paul McMullan's free-kick to edge the Warriors ahead in the tie.

Sean Burns, Bryan Wharton and John Carter had decent efforts for the hosts, but Stenny goalkeeper Greg Fleming repelled what came his way.

The away side almost doubled the lead when Ross McMillan hit a post late on.

Queen's now look to Saturday's second leg at Ochilview to repair the damage.

However having failed at the promotion play-off hurdle in four of the last five seasons before this one, perhaps the odds are against them.

Plenty of trickery down the left from the nippy Paul Woods helped Queen's Park dominate the opening 25 minutes, but with only Sean Burns' saved free-kick as the one clear chance to show for that superiority.

Some loose Spiders passing then afforded Stenhousemuir the opportunity to settle down - which made the face of an enraged Queen's Park boss Gus MacPherson as red as the training top he was sporting.

Stenny's McMullan almost caught home goalkeeper Billy Muir off guard with a 40 yard free-kick, before Colin McMenamin twice went close with a header and half-volley during a period of momentum for the Warriors, clinging for their League One lives.

But the goal they failed to register there came 10 minutes into the second half.

McMullan showed more set-piece expertise with a whipped free-kick which McCormack headed down into the left corner of Muir's net.

It was the right-back's second goal in two games - his only strikes of the season could not have come at a more pertinent time.

Fleming pushed away Carter's flick, while Wharton and Burns sent shots towards goal as Brown Ferguson's Warriors had their resilience tested.

But the Ochilview men ended up going even closer; McMillan's header from another McMullan delivery hitting the bottom of the post.
