Island Games 2015: Jersey men knocked out of football tournament

Ten-man Jersey are out of the Island Games after losing 2-1 to the Isle of Man in their final group match.

Isle of Man took the lead midway into the first half through Frank Jones, but Karl Hinds equalised soon after for his third goal in three games.

But Ciaran McNulty got the winner with 25 minutes to go to send the hosts out.

Jersey had centre-back Luke Campbell sent off in the closing stages after he received a second yellow card as they finished three points behind the Manx.

The Isle of Man will play Shetland in the semi-final, with the winners playing either Guernsey or Menorca in Friday's final.

It is only the second time Jersey have failed to make the knockout stages of the tournament.

In 2007 Jersey were eliminated on goal difference after ending level on points with Gibraltar at the top of their group.

Luke Watson leads Jersey out
Luke Watson said his side did not have the quality to beat the Isle of Man

"We're devastated," Jersey captain Luke Watson said.

"We put a lot of hard work and to fall short and be out without the chance of getting a medal is hard to take.

"It's a lack of quality, it can't be a lack of heart and a lack of work rate because those lads worked themselves to the bone.

"The commitment can't be questioned, we just fell short on quality against a very good side today."

Teenage midfielder Cav Miley played in his first Island Games, but the loss ends what is likely to be the only chance he will get to play in front of a home crowd.

"It's not a nice feeling to lose in front of all your friends, family and people you know," he told BBC Radio Jersey

"It means so much to be playing here in front of everybody.

"But we've come up against a great side and you want those challenges against great sides, and if we get more of them we'll keep on improving."
