Gateshead have signed free agent winger Jimmy Phillips on a one-year deal, after his release by Burton Albion at the end of the 2014-15 season.

Phillips, 25, played just once in the Brewers' League Two title-winning campaign last term and spent a month on loan at Conference side Alfreton.

He amassed 137 appearances at the Pirelli Stadium in six years following a move from Stoke City in July 2009.

"It's a new challenge for me," Phillips told the club website.

"Last season was difficult for me personally, but I came to meet the manager [Malcolm Crosby] last week, and I was impressed by his ideas moving forward."
