Barnsley win 7-6 on penalties

Scunthorpe 1-1 Barnsley (6-7 pens)

Barnsley won a dramatic penalty shootout 7-6 to reach the second round of the Capital One Cup after a 1-1 draw at Scunthorpe.

In a game full of penalty incidents, Josh Scowen and Paddy Madden traded spot-kicks for the goals in the space of five second-half minutes.

They came after Scunthorpe goalkeeper Joe Anyon had already saved a first-half penalty from Marley Watkins.

James Bree held his nerve to net the sudden-death shootout winner.

The Tykes had the final say after Sean McAllister had lifted his spot-kick over the crossbar for Scunthorpe.

Ben Smith had the chance to win it for Barnsley with the fifth penalty for the visitors but was denied by Anyon's save.

Robins on Scunthorpe v Barnsley

Scunthorpe United manager Mark Robins told BBC Radio Humberside:

"Apart from a 15-minute spell I thought we were the better team. I think when we settle down and get that little bit of belief and we get the passing going, we're a good side.

"Apart from taking the chances when they came I thought we gifted them their goal.

"We gifted them a penalty, it was a night of penalties."
