Goals from Josh Yorwerth and Jay Tabb saw Ipswich come from a goal down to beat Stevenage in the League Cup.

Stevenage led through an own goal as Ipswich defender Christophe Berra deflected into his own net after Dean Gerken had saved a Dean Parrett shot.

Debutant Yorwerth levelled after the break with a powerful header past Chris Day from Ryan Fraser's corner.

Tabb completed the Ipswich comeback sweeping a right-foot shot home after a neat low cross from David McGoldrick.

Stevenage thought they had been awarded a late penalty when Parrett fell under a challenge from Berra only for referee Fred Graham to overrule the decision of his assistant.

The visitors had enjoyed the best of the first-half chances and it was Parrett and Dipo Akinyemi who combined to breakthrough the Ipswich defence and force the opening goal.

Parrett's initial shot was saved but Berra was helpless to prevent the ricochet heading towards goal off Gerken's legs and then his shin.

Ipswich had added bite after the break and Yorwerth's headed equaliser bounced in the area before beating Day in the Stevenage goal.

Mick McCarthy was given a first cup-tie win as Ipswich manager as Brett Pitman and McGoldrick opened up the Stevenage defence before an unmarked Tabb applied the finish.

Stevenage boss Teddy Sheringham told BBC Three Counties Radio:

Sheringham on Ipswich v Stevenage

"There were a lot of positives tonight. To come to a place like this and get in front - it was a very positive first half. We played some nice stuff but they got back into the game very quickly after.

"We've got three days to get things right. The players are in the ice baths now to give their legs every chance of recovering. Hopefully by Friday they'll have their legs back and be raring to go on Saturday."

On the decision not to award his team a late penalty: "I was told that the linesman gave the penalty and the referee then gave it - then the linesman changed his mind. I don't know what happened. It wasn't a penalty in my view but the referee and linesman gave it, and changed their mind. It's a bit disappointing."
