Derry City missed a chance to ease any relegation worries as they lost at home to Drogheda United in the Premier Division on Saturday.

Sean Thornton headed the opening goal just before half-time to put United on course for their first win in nine league fixtures.

Jason Marks punished poor defending in scoring the second on 76 minutes.

The result takes Drogheda above Derry and into eighth and it was City's third defeat in their last four league games.

It was United's first match under caretaker boss Mark Kinsella.

Derry host Cork City on Friday night in an FAI Cup tie.
